What is the role of Shi'ite rebellions on the caliphate in Islam?

There was no Shia(shi'ite)during the caliphate phase in Islam. It started at the very end with the fourth caliphate , Al-imam Ali (PBUH) when some of the muslims join him (and thus were shia) and other muslims joined mo'aweya.
