Is it possible to remodel windows in a truly brick house?

My house was built in 1959 and is truly brick (load bearing). The windows are obviously from that era and are long and short. I'd like to increase the height of these windows and replace them with newer more modern windows. The question being - is it very difficult to do the above without causing damage to the structural masonry and costly? Expert opinions appreciated.
