American/ UK marriage how does citizenship work?

Me and my fiance live in the UK as of right now but we were recently engaged, and we would like to get married in American because I have more family over there. after we get married we are coming over to the UK for a couple years while he furthers his education ( I know what to do visa wise to allow me to work and stay with him over here while he does that) the dilemma is we would like to move back to America for permanent residence after he is done with school. What do we need to do so that he can get a green card or residence?
