Were the inaugural wild canaries that froze yesterday a case of animal abuse?

When Obama was inaugurated as President yesterday, the wild canaries froze to death in their cage. The intention was to release them at the appropriate time. Their death was senseless, and probably painful. Even if they had survived until the time of their release, how would they survive in the cold Washington DC weather? They're native to the Canary Islands, which is a tropical climate.
